Scholarship Update

Greetings Brothers!

I am excited and proud to note that we awarded four (4) Scholarships from our Delta Tau Delta Tau Chapter Scholarship Program.  At the end of August 2023, we awarded four each $5000 scholarships to the following students:

Andrew DiGiorgio (New York):  Andrew graduated from the PSU Smeal College of Business Class of 2016 with a B.S. in Supply Chain-Information Systems Management.  He pledged Tau chapter in the spring of 2013, where he remained an active brother through graduation.  Andrew wrote “My experiences with the chapter have been nothing short of life-changing; I grew as an individual, learned to be a contributing member to my community, and nurtured many life-long friendships that I still foster to this day.  I have since returned to campus to pursue my legal education (Law School), and I thank you in advance for your consideration in my candidacy for the scholarship.  Prior to law school, I spent the early portion of my career working in a consulting capacity for major Wall Street banks and financial services organizations.”

Tyler Markulics (Wayne, PA):  Tyler is a descendant of a PSU Tau Delt.  He is a Junior majoring in Business Management and a minor in Sports Studies.  He is a member of the Club Lacrosse team, Sport Management club, and Phi Kappa Theta fraternity.  Tyler wrote “Having been raised in a family of Penn State alumni, I have been passionate about the kinship within the Nittany Lion population from a young age.  From the commencement of my freshman year, I was determined to not only succeed academically, but to become involved with extracurriculars within and without my career path.  I chose to major in Business Management with a minor in Sports Studies to eventually pursue a management position within professional sports teams.”

Sean Brown (Havertown, PA):  Sean is a Junior at PSU majoring in Cybersecurity Analytics and Operations, Awarded the President Walker Award by Penn State for attaining a GPA of 4.00 through first semester, participates in the Club Ultimate Frisbee group and was a Boy Scout from 2009-2017.  Sean wrote “Growing up, I always thought I wanted to join a fraternity when I eventually started my college education.  Hearing my dad talk about all the great times he had with the Delts at Penn State, as well as the lifelong friends he made, led me to believe that I would be letting myself down by choosing an alternative to Greek life.  These feelings only grew stronger when I committed to Penn State, where the fraternity system is so enormous…… My experiences over the past two years have been some of the best of my life, and I’m confident they will only continue to get better.  It has also been really cool to continue to meet and get to know more of my dad’s Delt brothers when they come to visit State College.  Seeing how close many of them still are this many years later makes me a little upset not only that I didn’t join a fraternity myself, but also that Delta Tau Delta is no longer active at Penn State.”

Kara Ogden (California):  Kara is the daughter of brother Jeff Ogden (Class of 1995) who served both as Recording Secretary and Vice President while attending PSU.  Kara is headed into her junior year main campus PSU.  She is a biology major and plays on the soccer team. Kara wrote “When one thinks of Penn State University, the first word that typically comes to mind is “pride.”  Penn Staters are notorious for their pride, shouting “We Are” at each other in airports, grocery stores, and practically anywhere where the logo is seen.  Although the overwhelming amount of blue and white in my closet speaks for itself, my pride for Penn State manifests itself through my involvement as a member of the varsity Penn State Women’s Soccer team and through my engagement with the State College community.  Although I physically grew up in California, I emotionally grew up around Penn State, as both of my parents are proud alumni – my dad the former Vice President and Recording Secretary of the Delta Tau Delta chapter, and my mom a member of the varsity Women’s Swimming and Diving team.  Since the beginning, Penn State was a dream school for me.  So, getting the opportunity the not only attend the university but play on the varsity soccer team was an undeniable decision……. I take pride in going to Penn State and want to show what it means to be a Penn Stater to those around me.”

Please join me in congratulating these young people who are clearly Penn State proud!  It did feel great for us to be able to offer these funds.  We did a good thing and I hope we can continue this next year, and the next.

Take care all,
Fraternally,

John Thorsen,
